The project will develop final designs and obtain permitting for implementation of the Smith Cove Environmental Justice Project, a component of the larger Middle Branch Resiliency Initiative.
The project will enhance stormwater management, restore 10 acres of critical habitat, establish 7 acres of riparian buffer and create green spaces for the community.

This project will address historic degradation and elimination of aquatic habitat and associated ecosystem functions and services threatening coastal and community resilience.
Restoration efforts will include over 1,200 linear feet of living shoreline, re-establish surrounding aquatic habitat and create 1,600 linear feet of an upland vegetated resiliency berm along the MedStar Harbor Hospital campus and adjacent Hanover Street corridor.

This project will complete the final designs and permits for stream daylighting of Biddison Run. When complete, a natural stream forested wetland ecosystem will replace the existing piped stream.
In November 2023, NOAA and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) announced $144 million in new grants to support natural infrastructure projects in 31 coastal states and U.S. territories.
The grants are intended to support design and implementation of projects to enhance the resilience of coastal communities and improve habitat for fish and wildlife across the U.S.
The grants were awarded through the National Coastal Resilience Fund (NCRF), a partnership between NOAA, NFWF, the Department of Defense (DOD), Shell USA, TransRe, SalesForce, and Oxy.
The NCRF supports capacity building and larger-scale planning, design and implementation projects to help improve community and coastal habitat resilience and reduce risks and devastating impacts of rising seas, coastal flooding and more intense storms.
Funding for the grants includes $144 million for 109 projects provided through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Congressional appropriations, and private partnerships.
